Aapravasi Ghat
The name is a direct translation of Immigration Depot. Around half a million Indian contracted workforce passed through this point during the later half of the 19th century to work for the British Empire. Being defunct since 1923, as a cultural identity of Mauritius, it has been declared as a national monument. In 2006 UNESCO declared it as a World Heritage Site, conservation efforts are underway to restore the fragile buildings back to their 1860s state.
